Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machine pay table quiz - answers

4 September 2019

Sometimes it's difficult to figure out why a machine has paid you what it paid you when the game has multiplying wild symbols. A few days ago I was playing a three-reel, single-line video slot from Everi called Fascination. I had a few combinations land on the payline that took me a while to figure out why they paid what they did.

Following is the paytable for the machine and some winning combinations. These are the tables that appeared in last week's column so you don't have to go back to it if you missed it. The answers appear in the last table.

The following table lists the symbols used in the paytable and quiz combinations.

Symbol   Description
-Blank
CCherry
BBar
7B7-Bar
77
WWild
2W2x Wild
3W3x Wild
4W4x Wild

The following table is the paytable for the game.

ComboPays
W W W500
7 7 750
7B 7B 7B20
any 3 mixed 7, 7B   15
B B B10
any 3 mixed B, 7B5
C C C5
any 2 C2
any 1 C1

Here are some combinations. How much do they pay?

R1    R2    R3
772W
77BW
C7BC
7W2W
7WB
3WC4W
C77
2W4W7B
C-2W

Here are the answers.

R1    R2    R3    Pays   Calculation
772W100The 2W gives us the third 7 for three 7s and doubles the base pay of 50.
77BW15The W completes 3 mixed 7, 7B.
C7BC2An easy one -- two cherries.
7W3W150The Ws give us three 7s and 3W triples the base pay.
7WB0There's no combination with a 7 and a B.
C771One cherry.
2W4W7B120The Ws give us three 7Bs and the 2W and 4W multiply the base pay by eight.
C-2W4Not one cherry, two. The 2W is the second cherry and doubles base pay.
BW7B5The W completes 3 mixed B, 7B.
WCB2The W is our second cherry.
3WC4W60See next week's column.

We actually did things backwards in this quiz. You don't have to figure out how much a combination pays. The machine pays you for the combination and you have to figure out why the machine paid what it paid. I didn't give the calculation for the last combination. It's the trickiest combination. In case you got it wrong, you now have the correct answer and can try to figure out the calculation. (If you got it right, then you already know the calculation.)

Here's a hint for figuring out tricky payouts: First gather the multipliers in the combination and divide them out of the payout. That will give you the base pay, which you should be able to find on the paytable.

Here's a bonus question: If W W W pays 500, what does 2W 3W 4W pay?
