Follow-Up to When Do Slot Machines Select the Outcome of a Spin?

17 November 2008

By John Robison

My question is a follow up to your question about the timing of the selection of "numbers".

Do the casinos or "anyone else" have control over the the numbers selected by the RNG?

I have observed that some video keno machines "pause" sometimes after I hit the repeat bet button before continuing a game.

Do the numbers selected have any influence on the RNG?

Thanks,
Joe

Dear Joe,

I'll answer your questions and respond to your statements in order.

No one has any control over the numbers selected by the RNG.

Many video gaming devices, not just keno machines, have this pause. A couple of things can be happening during this pause. One, the machine can be writing auditing data to non-volatile memory chips in the machine. Unlike volatile memory chips, these chips don't lose the data written to them if they lose power.

And two, the machine might actually be doing nothing during the pause. The pause can be there to just slow players done and give them the opportunity to think about what they're doing. The pause is a safety valve to break the rhythm and maybe stop players from betting more than they can afford. Those pauses also help to stretch our bankrolls a little.

Finally, the numbers selected have no influence on the RNG.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
