How can slot players change the virtual reel layout?

25 October 2010

Dear Mr. Robison,

I am a fan of yours from South Korea!

There is only one casino allowed to domestic people in Korea and I enjoy slot machines there, especially video slot manufactured by Novomatic.

My question is this: How we can change the layout of virtual reel?

I read many questions and answers in the website but most of them were related with RNG. Now I understand how the machines work using RNG but it is useless for us to get any advantage on playing. The real question should be, "How we can change the virtual reel layout?"

Please understand my poor English and let us have your answer.

Best regards,
Stanley

Dear Stanley,

Poor English? Your English is far better than my Korean (kimchi is the only word I know) and your letter is better written than many I receive from native English speakers.

To answer your question, changing the virtual reel layout is a five-step process.

  1. Steal a copy of the program running the slot machine.
  2. Inspect the program to determine where the virtual reel layout is stored.
  3. Burn a new EPROM with your more generous reel layout.
  4. Break into machine to exchange production EPROM with your gaffed EPROM.
  5. Spend a few years in jail.

I'm not serious, of course. The casino gets its edge from the combination of the paytable and the virtual reel layout, so both are well protected in locked boxes in the slot machine. There's no way a player can alter either one legally.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
