The Slot Expert's Guide to Winning at Slots and Video Poker

8 April 2002

You can hear me give my slot and video poker tips live on The Good Times Show, hosted by Rudi Schiffer with Frank Scoblete, which is broadcast from Memphis on WMC 790AM Saturday morning from 10-12 CT.

As you know, Frank and I (and the beautiful A.P.) were at Treasure Island in Las Vegas for the Easter weekend.

Treasure Island has an unfortunate policy concerning their slant-top machines. They don't stack coin buckets on the tops of the slant-top machines, only between uprights. I've even seen slot floor attendants move a stack of buckets off the top of a slant-top machine on which I left some extra buckets. I think Treasure Island is trying to keep the place looking neat and classy, but I have experienced problems with this policy.

First, there's always the search for the nearest coin bucket when it's time to cash out. Sometimes the nearest bucket isn't all that near.

Second, you have to leave your machine to get the bucket. I had a machine with $20 in credits on it and in the 10 seconds it took me to stand up and walk 20 feet to get a bucket, some dirtbag attempted to sit down at the machine and steal my credits and I had to shoo him away.

This week's tip is to always have a coin bucket or two handy when you play. If there aren't any by the machine you want to play, go get one or two before you start so you'll have them when you need them.

As a postscript to this tip, I will admit that it seems like the machines know when I have the buckets because I always run out of credits when I have a bucket handy and always have something to cash out when there are no buckets in sight. At least it seems like it always happens this way.
